How to create a collectible figurine using 3D printing technology – step by step

1. From concept to 3D design

The process begins with a concept. Inspiration can come from a movie hero, a game character, anime, or a completely original idea. At this stage, the 3D artist creates a digital model using specialized software (e.g., ZBrush, Blender, Fusion 360).
The model must not only be faithful to the artistic vision but also technically sound – every detail, proportion, and shape matters for the quality of the final print.

Good to know: many figurines are created as "kits" – divided into several parts that can later be glued and painted. This simplifies the printing of complex shapes.

2. Preparation for 3D printing

Once the 3D design is ready, it goes into a "slicer" – a program that "slices" the model into layers and generates instructions for the 3D printer.

• layer thickness (e.g., 0.025 mm for very high quality),
• model position and supports,
• UV light exposure settings.

3. Printing the resin figurine

The figurine is printed on a 3D printer using SLA or MSLA technology (i.e., curing resin with UV light). Layer by layer, the model builds up on the build plate.
Depending on the size and level of detail, printing one figurine can take anywhere from a few to over a dozen hours.

Advantage of resin: it allows for extremely sharp details, visible even in the smallest elements like hair, armor, or decorative accessories.

4. Cleaning and curing

After printing, the figurine is not yet ready. The model is covered with liquid resin, which must be thoroughly removed in an isopropanol (IPA) bath or a special cleaning fluid.
Then, the figurine is placed in a UV chamber, where it hardens and gains its final strength under additional light.

 

5. Finishing and preparation for painting

After cleaning, supports are removed, and any marks are sanded with sandpaper. Sometimes, the figurine also requires light filling of micro-damages or gluing individual parts.
Only then does the model become a base for further personalization.

 

6. Painting and finishing details

This is the most artistic stage of the entire process. Figurines can be painted manually with brushes or an airbrush. Acrylic paints are used, which adhere well to the resin surface.
Painting allows the figurine to gain character – from realistic shadows to fantastic lighting effects.

Tip for collectors: many people leave figurines in their raw state to give them their own color scheme and individual character.

 

7. Finished figurine – time for display

Finally, there's the matter of proper presentation. Collectible figurines look best in display cases, on stands, or dedicated shelves. This not only protects them from dust but also highlights their uniqueness.
